The number of suicides is increasing day by day in the city of Mumbai and a woman Assistant Commissioner of Police has taken a unique initiative to prevent suicide. As part of this initiative, an awareness campaign is being implemented in the city. This initiative has been started in Bhandup, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli areas in the eastern suburbs and it is planned to implement an awareness campaign in the whole of Mumbai in the future.


The number of suicides has been increasing in the last few years due to various reasons like mental breakdown, family disputes or desperate financial situation. Apart from men and women, the number of children among those committing suicide is large and the number is increasing day by day. It was observed that the number of suicides has increased in the jurisdiction of Assistant Commissioner Surekha Kapile, who is working in Bhandup division. He noticed that suicides were being committed for trivial reasons. Therefore, she decided to conduct a public awareness campaign in the area to prevent suicide.

Kapile, with the help of some social organisations, undertook an awareness campaign under the 'Jagar' campaign in Vikhroli, Bhandup and Kanjurmarg areas. In this campaign, police and social organisation workers are holding meetings and interacting with the citizens. 

A person under mental stress is being counselled through expert counsellors. Over the past month, many  meetings have been held in various parts of the eastern suburbs. Surekha Kapile said that they are receiving good response and in the future they will try to give a new direction to the mentally exhausted citizens by implementing this activity in the whole of Mumbai.


Trying to save the family

When the breadwinner of a family commits suicide, their entire family is destroyed. Therefore, the family members who are under mental stress are immediately contacted and counselled through expert doctors and counsellors. Kapile said that doctors from big hospitals are providing free services in this campaign.
