Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital became the first hospital in Mumbai to perform bilateral sequential lung transplantation successfully on a 46-year-old COVID-19 recovered patient. The patient Shweta Bafna who was suffering from end-stage Lung Disease, fibrosing ILD and Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis got a new lease of life with this surgery.

Commenting further on the surgery Dr Sandeep Attawar, Director – Lung Transplant, Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital said, “Lung Transplantation stands at the apex of all organ transplants in terms of challenges in skill, surgical precision, dexterity and long-term close follow-up to ensure prolonged survival and quality of Life. This is not just because it is a dual organ transplant, but also because it is the only transplanted organ that faces both the recipient's bloodstream but also the environment with every breath. This makes taking care of the recipient and organ, paramount. Our patients are leading normal lives even after five years of a double lung transplant and this has been made possible by close follow-up monitoring and personalized care.”

Dr Sandeep Attawar also mentioned that the patient was suffering from an underlying lung disease since 2019 and was dependent on the oxygen of up to 3 litre/min ever since. Whilst still on the waiting list, she contracted coronavirus post which her oxygen requirement escalated up to 5-10 litre/min. Following the infection, her breathlessness and cough symptoms had worsened indicating deterioration of underlying lung condition post -COVID with oxygen requirement going up to 10 lit/min during activity. The patient was eventually prescribed to undergo a bilateral lung transplant immediately. She successfully underwent a bilateral lung transplant on 27 March 2022. The patient went home with maintaining normal oxygen saturation on room air.

Thanking the doctor and the hospital team, Bafna said, “When I tested positive, I saw my health waning by the day. I have been fortunate to get a compatible donor in time. I am immensely grateful to the donor’s family and to ZTCC Mumbai for carrying out organ distribution. I urge everyone reading this to donate organs and save many more lives like mine.”

The team comprised Dr Sandeep Attawar, Dr Urmil Shah, Dr Hemant Mehta, Dr Prabhat Dutta, Dr Rithin Rathnakar, Dr Anoop Kamath and others.
