Mumbai has seen a substantial increase in organ donations, marking a 30.86% rise from the beginning of this year to September 30 as compared to the same period in the previous year. Between January 1 and September 30, 35 patients donated 106 organs, including kidneys, livers, hearts, lungs, and pancreas, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) in Mumbai. This is a significant increase from the 81 organs donated by 31 donors during the same period in 2022.

This surge shows a revival of organ donations in the city after experiencing a significant decline in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ZTCC has been actively collaborating with neurologists and intensivists in city hospitals to boost cadaver donations in Mumbai. These efforts have led to monthly reviews by intensivist subcommittees.

The city recently witnessed its 38th deceased organ donation of the year when the family of a 66-year-old brain-dead patient donated his kidneys and liver. This donation occurred at Mulund's Fortis Hospital on Monday, making it the seventh such gift at Fortis this year. One kidney went to a patient at KEM Hospital, Parel, while the other kidney and liver were transplanted into patients registered at Fortis Hospital.

Last week only, it was reported that Maharashtra has emerged as a leader in digital pledges for organ donation. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) portal introduced a new system. Notably, a remarkable 28% of all pledges came from QR codes. Maharashtra led the nation with 22,335 pledges, followed by states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh.

Overall, India ranks second globally in live organ donations. However, when it comes to deceased donors, the country doesn't even make it to the top 20.
