The Union Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare released state-wise data on the number of people who took the organ donation pledges. Maharashtra topped the list with 22,565 pledges. People made organ donation pledges through the newly implemented digital pledge system on the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) portal.

Digitization is at its peak in India, as almost 28% of pledges were recorded via QR Codes.

Based on the state-wise data shared by the ministry, as of October 9, 79,677 pledges were taken by the citizens across the nation. Of these, Maharashtra recorded 22,565 pledges, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 18,401, Telangana with 11,060, Karnataka with 6,844, and Andhra Pradesh with 4,065.

Till October 9, around 16,699 individuals from Maharashtra pledged to donate their hearts, 13,310 their intestines, 17,140 their kidneys, 16,156 their liver, 14,403 their lungs, and 13,500 their pancreas.

Of the total pledges across 36 districts in the state, Mumbai lags far behind than smaller cities as only 272 individuals have registered for organ donation. With less than 150 organ donation pledges, Mumbai suburb records lowest registration in Maharashtra.

The government noticed that there was an increase in demand for organ transplants, and hence to save lives the government launched an online organ pledging system. The system has been active since September 13.

This digital system utilises a QR Code linked to the NOTTO website. It allows citizens to effortlessly take the pledge of donating organs. These pledges recorded online, will be associated with either the Aadhaar card number or the Ayushman Bharat Health account for maintaining proper records.

The NOTTO officials stated that the initiative will encourage people to become organ donors and the citizens can avail of organ donation options on their death and save the lives of at least 8 people. The need for living donors might be eliminated if only five to ten percent of all cases of brain death are successfully used for organ donation.

The Union Ministry of Health And Family Welfare is promoting this organ donation initiative quite vividly on social media. On the microblogging site X the ministry wrote, “Organ donation is the greatest act of generosity! Just one donor can save the lives of more than 8 people and improve the quality of life of many others. Pledge to be an organ donor today.”

As many as eight lives can be saved by a single cadaver donor. Donating a kidney will help two patients, whereas dividing a liver will help two more patients. Two donated lungs can save two people, while two hearts and pancreas can save two more.

As reported by Mumbai Live earlier, in Mumbai, over 4,000 people are now on the organ donation waiting list. Out of these 4,000 around 200 donors may be found by year's end based on historical trends. According to information provided by ZTCC, among the people on the waiting list, 3,408 are awaiting kidney transplants, 530 are awaiting liver transplants, 61 are awaiting heart transplants, 26 are awaiting lung transplants, 14 are awaiting pancreas transplants, 2 are awaiting small intestine transplants, and 5 are awaiting hand transplants.
