The ticketing frenzy for Coldplay’s upcoming concerts in Mumbai saw unprecedented demand from Indian fans, with over 1.3 crore people logging in to secure one of the 1.5 lakh available tickets.
Within just 30 minutes, all tickets for the British rock band's shows at DY Patil Stadium in January sold out. However, many fans were left disappointed and empty-handed as tickets disappeared almost immediately.
Owing to this huge demand, hotel rates in Mumbai are rising on account of the band's arrivals. Moreover, hotel rates around the venue (Nerul) and in the Navi Mumbai have also sky rocketed during the time of venue.
It has come to light that in January, luxury hotels are charging up to INR 5 lakh for three nights, a price hike so steep that it surpasses even New Year's Eve rates.
Most hotels, including five-star properties, in the vicinity of DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai are now fully booked for January 18, 19 and 21, the dates Coldplay has set for their India tour, according to hotel aggregator apps.
As per MakeMyTrip, courtyard by Marriott near the venue and Taj Vivanta in Vashi, Navi Mumbai have no rooms available during those dates.
Meanwhile, Fortune Select Exotica in Vashi, part of the ITC Hotel Group, is charging INR 2.45 lakh for one room for three people for three nights between 17 and 20 January. A few kilometres away from the venue in Turbhe, Fern Residency is charging almost INR 2 lakh for one room for two people for the three nights. Regenza by Tunga, another hotel in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, is charging INR 4.45 lakh for three nights during the concert period.
The Royal Tulip Hotel in Navi Mumbai had a different story to tell, as the current prices stand at around INR 10,000. Meanwhile, the website indicates no availability of any accommodation for January 17-19.
As per Booking.com, the price of hotel in The Park Navi Mumbai, in Belapur, near the Nerul, stood at around INR 25,000 currently. But if one were to book the same facility during the gig dates between January 18 and 19, one may have to shell a greater amount. The price for January 17-20 currently stands at around INR 2,70,000 for a room for 2 adults for a span of 3 nights.
It was a similar story with Ibis Navi Mumbai, as there are no available rooms in the property. The current prices, however start at around INR 10,000. This indicates the possibility of cheaper options already being sold out.
The concerts, set for January 18, 19, and a third show added later on January 21, each have a venue capacity of 50,000. The band will be performing in the DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai.
