We often travel by train and we come across boards placed on railway stations which have the name of stations on it. If you must have observed, these boards are yellow in colour and there is a particular reason for it. Black writing is most effective on a yellow background. Also, the names written on the yellow board shines bright in the day.

Yellow colour is visible from a long distance, so the name of the railway station is written on the yellow board. It helps the loco pilot as well to see the train from a distance who then accordingly reduces the speed of the train. Yellow colour helps the loco pilots to estimate the distance and slow down the train. Also, the yellow colour is clearly visible even in the dark at night.

Yellow has the highest wavelength after red. Lateral peripheral vision of yellow colour is about 1.24 times higher than that of red colour. This means that this colour is easier to see from a distance than any other colour.

In similar fashion, red coloured background sign boards are used for danger. The red colour is very bright to sense the danger from a distance.
