The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in November 2021, announced a one-of-a-kind initiative - Zero Plastic Starts with Me - with an aim to create awareness about pollution among the school children. Students were encouraged to learn about pollution and participate in the program by collecting wrappers, single-use plastic bags, plastic waste, bottles, etc., and spread the message of plastic pollution.
Keeping the same in mind, officials from the civic body recently informed that the activity was a massive success and more than 4000 students participated in the initiative. Information regarding the same was published in the Free Press Journal which revealed that a total of 51 schools participated in the initative whereby the students collected more than 1200 kg of plastic waste in the activity held in the first week of November 2021.
Awards were given to three students who collected the large amount of plastic waste and spread the right message. The civic body felicitated the following students
Besides this, the civic body also awarded seven schools in Navi Mumbai with the 'Zero Plastic Waste School’ award. Below mentioned schools were considered as the best performing ones and keeping the contribution in mind, NMMC felicitated them with the awards too.
Though the civic body expected over 50,000 students, between Class 2 to 10, to participate in the initiative, only over 4000 could do the needful, as the state was hit by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Students were guided about collecting plastic wastes and related litter which people have been throwing at public places in the locality.
Teachers and other staff from the school also participated in the activity by encouraging the students and sharing the message of single-use plastic which has been very harmful for the nature as it boasts several ill effects. Awareness was spread by the teachers, students and their respective families, whereby many also participated by taking oath to maintain cleanliness in the city.
