Recently, a Mumbai commuter was stunned by the exorbitant price charged by cab aggregator, Uber. The man was reportedly attempting to book a cab back home during heavy Mumbai rains. During this, he was taken aback by the fare going up to thousands.  According to reports, the fares for the 50-kilometre trip were more than INR 3,000.

Based on accounts, Shravankumar Suvarna posted his ordeal on Twitter. Suvarna shared screenshots of the Uber app that showed the prices. In the picture it can be seen that UberGo had a price of INR 3,041, Premier had a price of INR 4,081, and XL had a price of INR 5,159.

Suvarna's tweet read, “Flight to goa is cheaper than my ride home.”

Quickly his tweet gained traction and many took to social media, replying to it. One user undertook a few calculations to arrive at the price Uber should have charged instead. On the one hand, many took a humorous dig at the situation, others lashed out at the aggregator for its pricing mechanism.

Further, Suvarna claimed that during his commute without surge he pays between INR 800 to INR 1,000.

A slight increase in cab prices during peak hours and monsoon are acceptable. However, when fares surge to such considerable levels, people are compelled to seek alternative modes of transportation.
