Are you the one who keeps on thinking about late Stephen Hawking’s mysterious Black Hole Information Paradox? Within classical physics, nothing ever comes out of a black hole. In 1975, Stephen Hawking demonstrated that this is no longer true in the quantum theory: black holes radiate, lose mass and eventually disappear.

Hawking's computations predict that all black holes of the same mass evaporate into identical clouds of radiation provided they have the same mass. This surprising conclusion violates a basic rule of quantum mechanics, which asserts that information is never lost in time evolution. So must we conclude Einstein's gravity and quantum mechanics are incompatible - and cannot both be right? The jury is still out on this question.

If the same question bothers you, do join Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) discussion on Stephen Hawking’s Black Hole Information Paradox.

Professor Shiraz Minwalla will pay tribute to late Stephen Hawking by discussing on Hawking's Black Hole Information Paradox at the 'Chai and Why?' Event.

About the speaker: Prof. Shiraz Minwalla works in the area of string theory at TIFR and has won many awards for his research including the Bhatnagar award, Infosys Prize, and the New Horizons in Physics prize.

Started on January 4, 2009, TIFR’s Chai and Why provides a forum for informal discussions of interesting scientific issues outside a traditional academic setting.

Its build on the format of the popular “Café Scientifique” in Europe and “Science Cafés” in the US, Chai and Why aims to engage people who are interested in science but generally never have the opportunity to discuss their views with, and ask questions of, someone "in the know". It aims to be informal and accessible - much more so than a public lecture.

Venue- D.G. Ruparel College
