Airtel conducted new trials of its upcoming 5G network at Mumbai’s Phoenix Mall in Lower Parel. A video posted on Twitter shows that Airtel’s 5G network managed to touch 1.2 Gbps with ultra-low latency. This improves on the previous best speed of 1 Gbps recorded in Gurgaon.

Meanwhile, an upload speed of 850 Mbps was recorded by Airtel’s 5G network during the Mumbai trials. As per sources quoted by ET Telecom, a similar trial will be conducted in Kolkata soon.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) provided the requisite permissions to conduct 5G trials in the country earlier this year. Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) like Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are also bringing their 5G services to the country soon, while MTNL is among the applicants for the spectrum.

Network providers have signed partnership agreements with companies like Nokia, C-DOT, Ericsson, and Samsung for the 5G equipment. It’s worth mentioning that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is yet to allocate 5G spectrum to individual network operators as the current allocations are only valid for the trial period.

In early 2021, the Standing Committee on Information Technology said that 5G will be rolled out to Indian users in some form by the end of the year or early 2022. However, it anticipated 4G networks to make up for a big chunk of Indian mobile data usage for at least the next five to six years.
