While Indians are waiting for 5G, the country is already gearing up for the launch of 6G.

On Tuesday, November 23, Union Minister for Communication Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India is working towards an indigenously developed 6G technology with the aim to launch it either by 2023-end or early 2024.

He made these statements while speaking at a webinar organised by the leading media agencies.

The minister confirmed that the permissions have already been provided to the engineers and the scientists to work on the technology.

Addressing at the event, Vaishnaw said: “As compared to 4G, 5G internet will get many new features and internet speed will also be better. In the same way, 6G will also bring many good features with it.”

He also mentioned: “The development of 6G has already started. That will be seen somewhere in the time frame 2024 or 2023-end. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global,” he said.

Besides, the launch of indigenous 5G is also on the cards, the minister said, with the development of a core software for the technology to be completed by the third quarter of next year. The auctions for 5G spectrum is also likely to happen in the second quarter of calendar year 2022, the minister added.

Vaishnaw pointed that a lot of stress has been lifted from the telecom sector of India. This is mainly due to the relief measures announced by the government in September. The minister further said that the government is working on another set of reforms, and it will be out in the next three to four months.
