After nearly two hours of facing outage, WhatsApp services has been restored and the app has started to work now.

Prominent online tool Down Detector started noticing unusually high "problem reports" at 12.07 pm, and had listed thousands of such reports by 1 pm in India, WhatsApp's biggest market by user base.

Over 2 billion users rely on WhatsApp for communication and payments. Of the total users, most reports were about messages not going through, at 69 per cent, while others reported server disconnection and the app crashing altogether.

Other than India, social media users from Italy and Turkey also posted about not being able to send messages. The messaging service was down for users across the UK.

WhatsApp Web also appears to be affected by the outage. App’s web client is also unable to connect to the WhatsApp servers, suggesting a server-level outage, and not one that only affects the Android and iOS apps.

This is the first major WhatsApp outage since last year. It is pertinent to note that this is WhatsApp’s first major outage since the larger Meta outage on October 5, that took down other apps too -- Instagram and Facebook together, affecting millions of users over several hours before the services were back online.
