The Maharashtra government’s ambitious 100-day verification drive targeting autorickshaws, taxis, and other public service vehicles has been initiated under subdued circumstances, with minimal enforcement observed on its opening day. The campaign, which has been positioned as a major compliance exercise, was reportedly affected by the Maharashtra Day holiday, resulting in restricted field operations and limited administrative coordination.
It has been conveyed that the initiative is aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight across the state’s transport ecosystem. Authorities have stated that the drive is intended to identify key violations, including invalid permits, fake driving licences, and unauthorised passenger services. Additionally, the assessment of drivers’ basic Marathi proficiency has been incorporated into the broader framework of compliance checks.
However, the first day of implementation was marked by an absence of visible enforcement, particularly in Mumbai. It was observed that no coordinated inspections were conducted at high-traffic areas such as railway stations, major intersections, or transport hubs. Public transport services, including autorickshaws and taxis, were reported to have operated normally during peak hours, with drivers indicating that no inspection teams were encountered.
Officials have acknowledged that the closure of Regional Transport Offices significantly limited operational deployment. It was stated that only a few scattered inspections were carried out due to reduced manpower and lack of coordination. Authorities have indicated that full-scale enforcement is expected to commence once regular functioning resumes, with Monday being identified as the likely start of intensified checks. Statements from transport authorities have confirmed that the drive has formally begun, although specific operational details, including inspection locations, have not been disclosed. This approach has contributed to perceptions of a low-impact launch, despite the initiative’s stated importance.
Industry representatives have also highlighted the lack of on-ground activity. It has been reported that transport unions did not receive any feedback from drivers regarding inspections, with expectations now shifting towards stricter enforcement in the coming days. The campaign has been linked to recent regulatory messaging from the state government, where stricter norms, including language requirements for drivers, have been emphasised. The verification drive is scheduled to continue until mid-August and is expected to cover all Regional Transport Office jurisdictions across Maharashtra.
