Maharashtra has initiated a huge project to augment EV charging stations in Mumbai from January, reports stated. A target of 1,500 EV stations in a few years has been set by the government. Of these, the first 134 are anticipated to soon come up in the island city.

According to reports, an expression of interest has been invited by the authorities for a 12-year lease to put up the EV charging stations in Mumbai. Maharashtra's EV policy 2021 looks at 25 per cent electrification of intra-city public transport as well as last-mile delivery vehicles across MMR by 2021

Apart from this, it also pushes for the sale of electric scooters, cars for which there is the requirement for a requisite number of charging stations. These, based on accounts, will be apart from those being put up at 27 BEST depots and those at the 29 BMC public parking lots in the city.

Some narratives claim that nearly 300-350 EV charging stations have been put across Mumbai and Maharashtra through the last year by means of tie-ups with vendors. This is believed to entail the 70 in Mumbai and 30 in Navi Mumbai

Previously, the state government decided to implement the decision of Purchasing or Renting only Electric Vehicles for Govt/ Urban Local Bodies/ Corporations from 1st January 2022 instead of 1st April 2022.
