The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has decided to introduce 20 more digital buses in this month itself on a few other routes across the city.

This development comes after the transport body received a good response such buses on two routes between CSMT and Nariman Point/Cuffe Parade with more than 70 per cent capacity of passengers till May.

Officials stated that in the month of May, these buses gained more popularity and are now running with 80 per cent passengers using mobile apps or Chalo smartcards for digital travel.

However, the transport body expects to see a spike in ridership for such services with 90 per cent passengers by end of this month.

Mumbai became the first city in the country to get 100 per cent digital buses with a "Tap in and Tap out" facility after it came into force from April 19.

For those unversed, the digital buses have tap-in and tap-out facility with paperless transactions. The passengers tap in while boarding and tap out at the time of exit from the bus while the fare is automatically calculated and deducted from their mobile/smartcard wallet. With this, the cashless system, which is faster, saves paper and cutting of trees. It will also reduce cash handling costs at depots. Moreover, it also aims for conductor-free buses in the future.
