In recent developments, the Railway administration has decided to increase the number of local trains in order to reduce overcrowding. Accordingly, 2,773 local trains on Mumbai local, or 88 per cent, will be back on track from Monday, November 2.

Moreover, along with 15-coach locomotives, special, air-conditioned women's locomotives have also been started. As per reports, both in Central and Western Railways, 552 and 201 local trains have been increased respectively. As a result, the total number of local round trips on Central and Harbor has reached 1,572, while the total number of round trips on Western Railway has reached 1,201. As per the demand of passengers, 15 coaches will also run on the Central and Western Railways. All air-conditioned locals and all women special locals have been started on the Western Railway.

The suburban railway system had resumed from June 15 for state and central government employees as well as employees providing essential services. In view of the pandemic, the state government had earlier directed the Railway Police to levy heavy fines against those who are found travelling without face masks. Moreover, Abhay Yavalkar, Director of the state government's disaster management department, had written a letter to Railway Police Commissioner Ravindra Sengaonkar to take action against those travelling on unmanned trains.
