Commuters in western suburbs of Mumbai are in for some good news with the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) announcing that it will have at least two operational lines in 2020. The authorities have commissioned Metro Line-2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) and Metro Line-7 (Dahisar East-Andheri East).

Line-7 appears to be a bit of a concern right now since the MMRDA hasn’t been available to obtain the land needed for the car parking depot as it’s currently under the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Although the MMRDA offered an alternative land in Gorai for AAI, the Bombay High Court stayed this motion since the land had already been tagged for a law university. But barring these hurdles, the MMRDA strongly believes these two new lines will be operational in 2020. However, the authorities failed to give a precise timeframe as to when the metro lines will be ready for the commuters in the region.

“Once completed, these five lines -- 2A, 7, 2B, 4 and 6 -- with an aggregate worth of Rs 44,869 crore are expected to serve more than 50 lakh commuters at around 98 stations across the city," the MMRDA said in a statement.

On the other hand, the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 corridor which has faced several delays will reportedly be commissioned by the MMRC (Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation) in 2021.

Further, the MMRDA will activate Line-2B (DN Nagar-Mandale), Line-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Line-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli) by 2021.

Recently the Supreme Court ordered the MMRDA to stop the felling of trees for the construction of a car depot and other infrastructure related to Metro Line - 4.

After becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, one of Uddhav Thackeray’s first order of business was to halt the work for the Metro Line - 3 car shed in Aarey Colony which saw a stream of protests from local citizens as well as NGOs.
