In order to improve Mumbai's public transport system and reduce carbon emissions, four additional electric air-conditioned (AC) double-decker buses by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will soon ply on city roads.

The buses arrived in the city on Saturday, May 20, and have been temporarily parked at two different locations: two at the Colaba Bus Depot and the other two at the Anik Depot in Chembur.

"We received four more electric air-conditioned double-decker buses on Saturday," BEST General Manager Lokesh Chandra said while confirming the arrival of the buses. These new buses are expected to complete the registration process and enter service in the next few days.

According to BEST officials, the service of these electric AC double-decker buses marks a significant step towards a sustainable public transport system.

Currently, only two of the 38 double-decker buses plying in the city are electric and air-conditioned, while the rest are non-AC buses. By adding these electric buses to its fleet, BEST is not only contributing to reducing emissions but also offering passengers a quieter and more comfortable travel experience.

"The air-conditioned double-decker design also increases the seating capacity, ensuring efficient transportation of more people," said a senior BEST official, adding that all non-AC double-decker buses will be replaced with electric double-decker buses in a phased manner.

BEST has already placed an order for the purchase of 200 electric air-conditioned double-decker buses.
