With the commencement of 2022, Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will begin the procurement for 200 additional AC electric double-decker buses for the island city. With this, the fleet of double-decker buses will reach nearly 450 in two years, proclaimed Lokesh Chandra, general manager, reports stated.
Based on an account by the Times of India, he believes that this will surge the carrying capacity of buses. This is because double-decker buses can ferry nearly 100 passengers which includes standees in one ride.
Chandra further elaborated on how this will curtail the wait time for travellers at many bus stops. This will especially be the case on corridor routes for those commuting to work. He added that there were a reasonable number of small size buses that include the AC minis as well as the Midis.
Currently, the BEST has 48 non-AC double-decker buses. It has floated tenders for 200 AC electric double-decker buses. for which bids will be initiated prior to the end of the month. Chandra has now announced that will acquire additional twin-deck buses on a wet-lease.
In other developments, on December 21, BEST launched the ‘Chalo App’ and ‘Chalo Bus Card’ initiatives. The key features of the initiative include Mobile Tickets and Passes, Live Bus Tracking, Live Arrival Time, Live Crowd Indicator and Tap to Pay Smart Card.
