The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) recently announced a new set of implementations which will be done across all vehicles to ensure women in Maharashtra travel safely in the buses from 2022.

Starting 2022, two cameras will be fit in all BEST buses procured by the department, one in the front of the bus near the door, and the other near the rear side of the door. The installation will be done in non-AC CNG and AC electric buses, both the ones owned by the BMC and the ones in lease. Information regarding the same was shared by Mr. Lokesh Chandra, General Manager – BEST. A report regarding the same was published in the Times of India.

The aim is to ensure passengers, especially women, have a safe journey. By installing in both the ends, officials will be able to film the entire bus and look at the footage thoroughly, when needed. Moreover, having the cameras installed will instill fear in those who plan to perform crime or mischief in the buses.

In addition to this, women will also be able to use the SOS buttons which will be installed in the red buses. Once pressed during emergency, the team in the control room will be signaled and the alert will help in taking necessary action in a timely manner.
