Mumbai – Finally the BEST employees will get their pending salaries on March 21 and 22 after the civic body intervened in the affairs of its undertaking. The BMC has also decided to chalked out a plan to put the public transport facilitator in a profitable condition. For the time being, employees will be given salaries from the BEST funds itself, informed Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar.
The 44,000 BEST employees have not received their salaries of the last month yet. As per tradition, they get their salaries by 10th of every month. As the BEST administration failed to issue employees’ salaries, employees unions had given an ultimatum and threatened to launch an agitation. The BMC House also witnessed strong repercussions on this issue.
A meeting between Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta and BEST general manager Jagdish Patil was held on Saturday. Leader of the House Yashwant Jadhav, standing committee chairman Ramesh Korgaonkar, Best committee chairman Anil Kokil, improvements committee chairman Anant Nar and others also attended the meeting. But group leaders of other political parties did not attend this meeting which indicates that Shiv Sena has taken a decision on BEST without taking other parties into confidence.
Mayor informed that a decision to chalk out an action plan to make BEST a profitable undertaking. This action plan will be ready in next seven to eight days and the BEST will be accorded financial assistance as per the plan, he added.
The BEST undertaking spends around Rs 182 crore on salaries of its employees every month. This amount will be given to the BEST but the Mayor did not inform from which fund or department the BMC would be diverting this amount towards BEST.
