Not a single monsoon goes by when commuters don’t face clogged railway tracks and stalled trains. Railways believe that waste and garbage, which is thrown by the adjacent buildings and slums, blocks sewers leading to clogged drains.

Considering the woes, the Western Railway (WR) authorities, along with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will come forward and will set up dumping points - where people will be able to throw the waste in - at railway stations. These will be set up by the BMC along the railway tracks.

As officials told Hindustan Times, railways find it difficult to clear tracks as collecting garbage along the tracks is a mammoth task despite running a muck special trains (which collects garbage off the tracks). Along with this, the BMC will slap fine of INR 500 for throwing waste on tracks.

On Central Railway, the railway authorities and BMC officials will try an remove garbage from Harbour line as there is lesser garbage than other lines.

Railway officials pointed out that due to excessive garbage, motormen have to lower down the speed on various stations, and one such restriction is near Vikhroli station.

Railway minister Piyush Goyal who had come down to Mumbai post-Elphinstone stampede asked civil and railway officials that local train services should not be hampered.
