Railways install CCTV camera on Mumbai locals

The project to install CCTV cameras which were approved in the Union Budget back in February 2018, has been progressing slowly since with the railways installing cameras in 85 locomotives.

According to sources, the railway administration has decided to install CCTV cameras in all the coaches of the locomotive in an effort to curb instances of theft, accidents and crimes against women.

This decision was taken by the authorities two years back, due to which, out of 259 locomotives on the Western and Central Railways, only 85 locomotives have been fitted with cameras.

As per reports, the Western Railways has been installing cameras in women's as well as general coaches. However, only women's coaches are bring preferred for the installation of cameras on the Central Railway. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier inspected various facilities along with the pedestrian bridges on the Mumbai Suburban Railway line after the accident at the Prabhadevi station of the Western Railway.

Meanwhile, the project was approved in the Union Budget back in February 2018. After that, the work of installing cameras on Central and Western Railways was started by Rail Tel. However, the work has been progressing slowly since. Moreover, the project has not gained momentum during the last eight months amidst the pandemic when the local was closed.

As per data, there are about 100 local trains on the Western Railway, of these, cameras have been installed in 144 women's coaches of 47 locals and 60 men's coaches. On the other hand, there are 159 local trains on Central Railway. However, the work of installing cameras in only women's coaches of 38 localities has been completed.

In 2019, a total of 33,828 various crimes were registered on the Mumbai Suburban Railway. From January 2020 to November 2020, 8,027 crimes have been committed. These crimes include theft, robbery, molestation, assault, murder and attempt to murder.
