New CCTV cameras to be installed on Western Railway

Currently, several issues of safety, especially of female passengers travelling by train, have come to the forefront whereby passengers are being subjected to various forms of harassment, molestation etc.

Western Railway (WR), in a recently taken decision, has planned to increase the number of CCTV cameras across stations between Churchgate and Virar. Reports state that the decision was taken to curb crime at the railway stations and nearby areas thereby ensure the safety of passengers, especially women. Furthermore, with this activity, the body will also that all 2,729 existing old cameras are replaced.

The report released by the WR shows that about 1,529 new cameras are being added. Currently, several issues of safety, especially of female passengers travelling by train, have come to the forefront whereby passengers are being subjected to various forms of harassment, molestation etc. Therefore, the officials have realised that the security measures have to be increased by the railways and CCTV cameras have to place in the women's coaches of the Mumbai local trains. Furthermore, the security at the station is also being increased.

Sharing more information, the railways informed that CCTV would help in the successful investigation of any crime within the railway boundaries. But due to the insufficient number of devices and their inferior quality, the issue of CCTVs in Mumbai division has often been a topic of discussion. The Railways has however emphasized on increasing the number of devices for the safety of women passengers as well as ordinary passengers.

Officials expect the work to be completed soon, and the team will add 1,529 new cameras and the existing cameras will be updated to ensure better visibility. The cameras will also be installed under an integrated security system.
