CCTV cameras will be placed inside motormen cabins in local trains on the Western Railway from February 2023. The WR is expecting the work to be completed by June 2023. With this, it will be easier to keep an eye on the movement of the motormen, guards and along with it, it will be easy to trace the cause of the accident or mishaps, said officials.
The Union Ministry of Railways have already approved a project of installing CCTV cameras in motorman cabins, as this project was included in the budget for the financial year 2021-22.
Everyday, local trains run on central and western railway in large numbers making more than 3000 trips. Though railways have a separate train management system for planning local trains, yet sometimes, motorman errs while driving the local, which leads to accidents. Incidents like forgetting to halt at a station, not following the speed limit, moving forward despite an indication of red signal, etc, happens. Though such incidents don’t happen often, concerned employees who are found guilty are punished.
Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, said initially, a CCTV camera will be installed in one motorman’s cabin of the local train on an experimental basis. If this experiment succeeds, then installation of CCTV cameras in other motorman's cabins will begin. This system will be installed in 224 motorman-guard coaches in 112 local trains of Western Railway. For this, an expenditure of Rs.2 crore 80 lakh has been proposed.
