In order to provide east-west connectivity to pedestrians, the Central Railways (CR) Mumbai division has decided to construct 10 foot-over bridges (FoBs) across railway tracks in the city. This will be funded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations (BMC).

These FOBs will be constructed between CSMT and Mulund on the Main Line, and between CSMT and Mankhurd on Harbour Line.

Officials said that the development of these bridges has been a priority for CR since 2019. However, after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Uddhav Thackeray took office, project decision-making delayed. Besides, COVID-19 induced lockdown further prolonged the wait.

The construction of all 10 FOBs is expected to entail an investment of INR 116.3 crores, of which INR 28 crores has already been deposited by the BMC in April 2020. The remaining funds will also be handed over as soon as possible.

The demolition of old FOBs at a few places and construction of new ones will be completed in 18 months.

Tenders will be invited for reconstruction of these bridges in the next 15 days.

The reconstruction of FOBs will be done at Bhandup and Kanjurmarg, while new FOBs will be built between CSMT and Masjid, north of Masjid station, close to Matunga workshop, between GTB Nagar and Wadala, south of Mulund station, between Matunga and Sion, close to Apna Bazaar in Nahur, and near Kanjurmarg. Reconstruction of FOBs will be taken up at Bhandup and Kanjurmarg.

FOB extension work will be undertaken at Currey Road station on the east side. Moreover, BMC has also approved an FOB to connect Hancock bridge.
