Coronavirus Pandemic: BEST and BMC help Israelis stranded in Mumbai to fly back home

A group of Israelis in Mumbai were able to reach their home with a little help from the Indian government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The group travelled to Israel in their national carrier EL Al on Wednesday.

After the Indian government announced a ban on domestic and international flights, the Israelis citizens had no way of flying back to their country. However, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted an exception for special flights.

The few flights that are currently departing or arriving are evacuation flights either bringing Indians from foreign countries or flying foreigners stranded in India back home. The Israeli Consulate in India had arranged a ferry flight to fly back the citizens stranded in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, five Dutch tourists, who have been on an international road trip since the last 11 months with their dog, have also been stranded in Mumbai. The group has been stuck in the city due to suspension of flights amid the national lockdown. A major concern for the group is they are running out of rations as shopkeepers are wary of European owing to the coronavirus scare.

Other than foreigners, pilgrims and labourers are also stuck in various parts of Maharashtra. CM Uddhav Thackeray yesterday assured that they have reached out to the respective District Collectors to search for those stranded including pilgrims, labours and others.

The Chief Minister’s move comes amid multiple reports which narrate that people from the unorganised sector are suffering the most during the 21-days countrywide lockdown.
