Central Railway's freight service continues despite coronavirus pandemic

To meet the needs of several industries, Central Railway, during the coronavirus lockdown, successfully carried more than 22 million tonnes of freight in a period of 165 days from March 23, 2020 to September 3, 2020.

To ensure a timely freight delivery for services in the energy and infrastructure sector, the Railways department has planned this segment of trains to be fully operational, despite the pandemic. Amidst the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown, the Central Railway (CR) department successfully met the needs of the industry, and transported more than 22 million tonnes of goods in 165 days, from March 23, 2020, to September 3, 2020.

As per reports, CR carried 4,24,931 wagons of coal, food grains, sugar, petroleum products, fertilizers, containers, iron and steel, cement, onions and other narrow goods through 8,899 freight trains, during these 165 days, and an average of 2,575 wagons were loaded daily.

Furthermore, the report stated that CR loaded 1,60,002 wagons of coal for various power projects during the above-mentioned period to ensure uninterrupted power supply. On the other hand, 2,634 wagons with food, 2,213 with sugar, 19,921 with fertilizer and 6,192 with wagons were operated. 

In addition, 42,029 wagons of petroleum product, 11,297 of iron and steel, more than 27,000 wagons of cement, 1,32,105 of containers and about 21,237 of D-Oil cakes and other items were also loaded.

It is said that the railway staff are working relentlessly, round the clock, across various goods sheds, stations and control offices to ensure that the supply of goods is not affected. Loco pilots, guards are driving these trains skillfully. The main maintenance staff of tracks, signalling, overhead equipment, locomotives, coaches and wagons have been keeping the infrastructure in good condition to ensure easy transportation of vehicles, without interruption. As Coronavirus warriors, the aim of the CR team was to keep the supply chain intact amidst the tough time.
