In response to commuters' demand, the Central Railway (CR) will soon increase the number of trains departing from Platform 5 at Dadar station on the fast line. There are currently fewer than 10 trains running from this platform.
For this, CR authorities will get rid of the barrier between Platforms 4 and 5 and realign the rails. This initiative is part of a larger plan to decongest Thane, Kalyan, and Dadar stations.
CR is also expanding Dadar station to make space for more commuters and reduce congestion. This expansion will result in the permanent closure of Platform 2 and the extension of Platform 1. There are also plans to facilitate train movement from Platforms 4 and 6.
According to a report by HT, the closure of Platform 2 by CR authorities was done to manage the crowd on Platform 1. However, this has made it difficult for commuters to board a train that leaves Parel and starts in Dadar.
To alleviate crowding, there have been calls to enlarge Platforms 4 and 5 whenever possible. In response, CR is proposing to enlarge Platform 5 at Dadar station. This will allow commuters to double-discharge. This means that they can disembark at both Platforms 4 and 5.
Currently, Platform 5 houses several stalls, a staircase to the foot-overbridge (FOB), and other facilities. To create more space on the platforms, CR plans to relocate some of the offices and stalls.
Much of the work required to widen Platforms 1 and 2 from seven to 10.5 metres has already been completed. Dadar station currently has six platforms and serves about five to six lakh visitors per day. It not only serves as a terminus for long-distance trains but also connects the Central and Western Railways.
