The central government has now given relief to motorists regarding the installation of FASTags as the Union transport ministry on Thursday, December 31, decided to extend the deadline for collection of toll charges on National Highways (NH) through FASTags till February 15, 2021.

Earlier, the Transport minister had made FASTag mandatory for all four-wheelers from January 1. However, due to difficulties faced by motorists in getting FASTags, the central government extended the deadline.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had announced that from January 1, 2021 toll plazas on national highways would be converted to FASTag lanes instead of cash to make toll collection at toll plazas easier and safer.

However, if a traveller comes to the toll plaza without a FASTag, he will have to pay double the toll after the deadline.

The central government has introduced FASTAG scheme in 2016 to reduce congestion at toll plazas. However, considering the number of FASTAGs and the number of vehicle owners in the country, it was difficult to install FASTAG on all vehicles in the allotted time.

After enforcing FASTAG, vehicles will not have to pay toll at toll plazas in cash. This will only benefit the passengers as it will also save fuel and time, said officials.

FASTag can be purchased from 22 different banks. It is also available on e-commerce platforms like Paytm, Amazon and Flipkart. If FASTag is connected to NHAI prepaid wallet, recharge can be done through UPI / Debit Card / Credit Card / NEFT / Net Banking etc. If there is a FASTag link to the bank account, the money will be deducted directly from your account. If FASTag will be connected to the Bank Wallet, hence, the amount is deducted directly from it.

The transport ministry had issued a notification in November which said that FASTag was mandatory from next year for old vehicles that were sold before December 1, 2017.
