The construction work on the Mumbai Metro lines has resumed across the city, and officials are working relentlessly to complete the project and ensure no time is wasted. It is only one of the highly-anticipated projects in the city. As per recent developments, officials had ordered a flash butt welding machine for the work on Mumbai Metro-3 line, and the same has reached Mumbai.

The welding machine was from the USA and will be used for the rail connection on Metro-3 route. Officials have started the work at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Station from Friday, October 9, 2020, and reports state that this line will use two flash butt welding machines. While the first has arrived, the second machine will reach Mumbai by the end of November.

As proposed, Mumbai Metro-3 will connect Colaba, Bandra and Seepz; and this is said to be one of the most important routes in the city.

Officials related to the project have said that head hardened rails will be used for on the route and the welding procedure of these rails will be done by aligning, pre-heating, flashing, forging, stripping and air-quenching using 340 flash voltage and 420 boost voltage, using the flash butt welding machine.

Data suggests that the Metro-3 line will require 10,740 tonnes of head hardened rails and 8,366 tonnes of rails are yet to be received by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). These will soon arrive in Mumbai from Japan. At present, around 18 meters long head hardened rails will be welded to form continuous rails, and the same will be achieved with the help of flash butt welding machine.
