Mumbai has witnessed a massive leap of 200% in the purchase of electric vehicles (EVs) since 2019 owing to the government concessions. In 2019, the city registered 311 EVs and jumped to a total of 12,594 of them in 2022. Thanks to the subsidies and tax exemptions being provided by the government, public preference has grown for EVs.

Considering the current situation, it seems that Maharashtra will not only fulfil but will also overachieve the target of having 10% of all new vehicles registered to be electric by 2025.

According to a directive issued by the additional registrar of the cooperative housing society, it will now be an easy task to install EV chargers in the society premises. An EV owner will obtain NOC within 7 days on adhering to required safety advisory issued by the government, reads the directive.

Last year, Maharashtra registered 23,74,134 vehicles out of which 1,36,022 were EVs, which is 5.7% of the total registered vehicles.

Meanwhile, a big relief for those who are planning to buy electric vehicles in Mumbai. 330 new e-charging stations will be set up in 26 areas of Mumbai in next two months. As there is a dearth of charging stations for electric vehicles, many prefer petrol-diesel vehicles. To make it easier for citizens to charge their vehicles near their homes or in their vicinity, the BEST has undertaken the construction of e-charging stations.
