What's Hyperloop?

Elon Musk is known for his super ambitious plans of colonizing Mars and making road transportation completely electric with SpaceX and Tesla respectively. And from what we've seen in the past decade, the man makes his dreams a reality. One of his latest interests was creating a transport system that has near-vacuum tubes that would suck across passenger filled pods at 1000 km per hour. Just like blowing out a small paper ball through a straw. It uses magnetic levitation in low-pressure systems to transport goods and people.

How can it affect Mumbai?

Mumbai being the business hub of the country, sees lakhs of people traveling to and fro via road, rail and air. The Government of Maharashtra has now announced that Virgin Hyperloop one and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to identify potential routes and analyse the high-level economic impact and technical viability of hyperloop transportation solutions in India.
As per the company, the system could revolutionize the transport experience. The journey that now takes 3 hours could be cut down to just 14 minutes. Truly hard to believe.

"By reducing travel time to under 20 minutes, a hyperloop route will help intensify the connectivity between the metropolitan regions of Pune and Mumbai, transforming the two cities into India’s first and largest Megapolis,”

-CM Devendra Fadnavis

The company has also signed a MOU with the Government of Karnataka to connect Bengaluru to the growing industrial centers around it. Initially, talks were on for connecting the major metros of the country i.e. Delhi-Mumbai, Bangalore-Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai-Bangalore, Mumbai-Chennai and also the ports. That would reduce travel time from Mumbai to Delhi to 60 minutes and Mumbai-Chennai to 30 minutes.

If the field tests go well, Mumbai-Pune in under 20 minutes could soon be a reality!
