In a significant move towards promoting local artisans and indigenous products, Indian Railways has launched the 'One Station One Product' (OSOP) initiative. This initiative aligns with the Government of India's 'Vocal for Local' vision and aims to provide a platform for local and marginalized artisans to showcase and sell their products. Under the OSOP scheme, dedicated outlets are established at railway stations across the country, offering a unique opportunity for artisans to gain visibility and boost their income.

Expanding Reach Across the Nation

As of November 9, 2023, the OSOP initiative has gained substantial momentum, with 1,134 operational outlets spanning 1,037 railway stations throughout the extensive Indian Railways network. Notably, within the Western Railway zone, 86 OSOP outlets are strategically positioned at 83 stations, with Gujarat hosting 51 of these outlets.

Empowering Local Artisans

An article in the Free Press Journal shared thoughts presented by Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, who elaborated on the concept of 'One Station One Product,' highlighting its focus on region-specific products. This encompasses a wide array of goods, from artifacts crafted by indigenous tribes to handwoven textiles by local weavers. It also includes exquisite handicrafts such as world-renowned wood carvings, chikankari embroidery, and zari-zardozi work on clothing, as well as locally sourced items like spices, tea, coffee, and various processed or semi-processed food items.

Gujarat's Rich Heritage on Display

In the culturally rich state of Gujarat, numerous indigenous products have garnered prominence. These include bamboo handicrafts, mesmerizing mirror work wall hangings, traditional artifacts, vibrant Warli paintings, hand-printed sarees, dress materials, intricate embroidery, imitation jewelry, fine leather goods, delectable pickles, aromatic spices, wholesome dry fruits, and even pure raw honey. Presently, 51 One Station One Product outlets are thoughtfully distributed across 48 stations in Gujarat.

OSOP's Origin and Impact

The OSOP scheme took root in the Union Budget for 2022-23, with a pilot project launching on March 25, 2022, spanning 15 days and covering 19 stations. Valuable insights gathered from this pilot initiative led to the official promulgation of the OSOP policy on May 20, 2022, by the Ministry of Railways. These OSOP outlets have proven transformative for local sellers, providing them with a remarkable platform to exhibit their products to a vast and diverse audience, resulting in a substantial increase in sales and a notable improvement in their livelihoods.

Distinctive Outlets with Unique Allotment Process

Indian Railways has introduced uniquely designed sales outlets, each possessing a distinctive appearance and logo, in line with design standards developed by NID/Ahmedabad. The allotment of these outlets is conducted through a meticulous tendering process, with applicants being selected based on their alignment with the scheme's objectives. Allotments are determined through a rotation system via a draw of lots at various stations.

Outreach for Inclusivity

The OSOP Policy places a premium on ensuring that the benefits of this program reach the target demographic, particularly those at the grassroots level. To achieve this laudable objective, the Railway Authorities have adopted a multifaceted approach, encompassing newspaper advertisements, dynamic social media campaigns, informative public announcements, comprehensive press notifications, and direct engagement with artisans through personal visits, among other measures.
