Rise in coronavirus (COVID-19) infection has increased concerns across the nation and the number of cases in Maharashtra are alarming. COVID-19 situation in Mumbai has raised concerns fro the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation as several people have reported infection in the last few weeks.

Observing this, and with an aim to  control the outbreak of the second wave, officials have demanded tests of passengers visiting the state to increase. As per reports, passengers coming from Vidarbha will have to get tested at the railway station from Monday, March 22, 2021. The BMC has decided to increase the number of tests further and has set a target of 50,000 tests per day, many of which will be conducted at crowded railway stations, markets and other public places in the city.

At present, more than 20,000 tests are being performed every day in Mumbai and more than two and a half thousand patients are being  diagnosed on a regular basis. The incidence has also gone up from 5 per cent to about 12 per cent in a week.

Infection has spread in Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal and other districts of Vidarbha and officials have noted that many migrants are arriving in Mumbai regularly, and are also likely to increase the spread of infection in Mumbai. To prevent the same, antigen tests will be conducted at the railway stations for passengers arriving to Mumbai from any of the regions in Vidarbha.

If tested positive, they will be quarantined as per the rules. Furthermore, in order to increase the number of tests, officials will offer free testing services at crowded railway stations like Dadar, Bandra, etc., informed Additional Commissioner, Suresh Kakani.
