Commuters travelling on Western Line and Central Line will get to travel in 78 partially air-conditioned local trains but for this, Mumbaikars will have to wait till 2021.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, that manufactures and procures trains, has issued tenders to get hold of 39 new 12-coach AC trains for the city. In order to get 78 partially AC trains, six coaches of each of these trains will be replaced with non-AC coaches and will be distributed equally between the western and central railway line.

As per the senior Central Railway Official, the ICF has called for tenders and by next year, the procurement will begin. He added that replacing AC coaches with non-AC ones will take another three years.

However, the WR will get three additional AC trains considering the positive response the only AC train has received. One of these three trains will arrive in September while the rest will come in December 2019.

The WR is also planning to halt the existing AC train at Grant Road, Charni Road and Marine Lines railway station in addition to the existing stations.
