A new report talks about the dwindling number of flights during the 14 hour Janta Curfew yesterday, with estimates suggesting that only 2,000 employees worked on the day. As per sources, the airport sees around 45,000 employees on normal days. Since the Indian Government has already announced a shut down of flights travelling internationally, the traffic at the airport is expected to fall further.

As for businesses within the airport, it is said that only two food and beverages stalls were open at Terminal 2, mostly catering to passengers transiting through Mumbai. Officials involved in the airline business have mentioned that while the Mumbai airport used to see close to 950 flights in a day, it’s now come down to a paltry 600. It’s worth noting that the last time Mumbai’s airport averaged 600 flights per day was back in 2006.

“About 100 international flights that are currently being operated will go off the radar from Monday. But if the curfew lifts, the number of domestic flights might go up a bit. On an average, Mumbai airport used to handle about 950 arrivals and departures a day and now it is down to 550 to 600 flights,” a senior Mumbai air traffic controller said.

The rise in positive coronavirus cases in Mumbai as well as the state of Maharashtra has certainly caused some panic among the citizens as well as the state government. The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has announced that it will conduct home screening to stop people from physically coming into assigned testing hospitals.

This new home screening policy will be boosted by the inclusion of private testing labs, which should help the authorities conduct more tests in an efficient manner.
