As there are restrictions for general public travelling by Mumbai locals, the Railways have stopped issuing daily tickets for all.
Earlier, the state had allowed workers under essential services and government personnel to travel in trains irrespective of their vaccination status and they were allowed to buy daily single or return journey tickets.
However, despite locals have started running at 100 per cent capacity, passengers are still not being given tickets and are being forced to take monthly passes. Owing to this, there is an outrage amongst commuters.
An internal notification from Railways is yet to be released in this regard. The Central Railway this week stopped issuing daily single and return journey tickets completely, while the Western Railway was issuing daily tickets in absence of the internal notification following the state government order.
Although the increase in round trips has been a relief, there is a growing sense of resentment among commuters as passes are mandatory for local travel. Passengers are lamenting that it is not feasible to buy a monthly pass for one or two days a week due to non-availability of tickets.
Moreover, it has also come to light that passengers who have not been vaccinated are also traveling without a ticket or by obtaining a pass on the basis of a fake identity card. Therefore, local trains are getting very crowded when they reach home in the morning and evening during office hours.
The number of passengers increased drastically after the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government allowed the fully vaccinated to travel in the trains.
