The Maharashtra government has extended the deadline for installing High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, to June 30, 2026. The move gives lakhs of vehicle owners across the state more time to comply with the mandatory vehicle security requirement.
Announcing the decision, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the extension was intended to reduce inconvenience for vehicle owners while ensuring wider adoption of the security system.

According to the transport department, HSRP plates are designed to improve vehicle security and help authorities prevent the misuse of fake number plates. The tamper-proof aluminium plates come with several security features, including a chromium-based hologram, a laser-etched serial number, and non-removable snap locks that make duplication difficult.

Under the revised timeline, vehicle owners must either install the HSRP plates or book an appointment for installation before June 30, 2026. The government has instructed citizens to complete bookings only through the official HSRP portal and avoid unauthorised agents or middlemen.
From July 1, 2026, the transport department will launch special inspection drives across Maharashtra to check compliance. Vehicles found without HSRP plates or proof of appointment booking may face action under the Motor Vehicles Act, including a penalty of up to Rs 1,000.
Officials said the rule is expected to impact a large number of vehicle owners, especially in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where older two-wheelers, taxis, autorickshaws, and private vehicles account for a significant share of traffic.
The government has urged motorists to complete the process well before the deadline to avoid last-minute rush and delays in appointment availability.
The Maharashtra government said the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen vehicle security, improve identification systems, and curb the circulation of fake registration plates across the state.
