Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi which is to be celebrated on August 22, the Maharashtra government has allowed the resumption of inter-district bus services from today. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) had suspended its operation at the initial stage of lockdown in March this year.

Now, the Maharashtra government has allowed the MSRTC to operate inter-district bus services. The passengers and staff will have to ensure standard operating procedures (SOPs) to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

As per the government directives, the passengers will not require an e-pass to undertake inter-district travel in the MSRTC buses. It is not required for commuters to take approval for inter-district travel in the ST buses.

On Wednesday, Shekhar Channe - the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of MSRTC - informed that the Maharashtra government has allowed bus services for inter-district travels from August 20.

MSRTC is one of the biggest state-owned transport corporations which ferried nearly 65 lakh passengers on a daily basis. It has a workforce of nearly one lakh people and 18,000 buses. The ST bus services were limited to intra-district travel only but it has been allowed to ferry passengers in inter-district travel.

Due to the lockdown and coronavirus, the MSRTC is also facing huge losses as each bus is allowed to carry fewer passengers than before. The state corporation has sought financial assistance of ₹1,000 crores from the Union government.
