According to a report by a panel formed by the Supreme Court, in Maharashtra, the number of accident-prone spots have increased by nearly 100 per cent. So far, 1,324 accident-prone spots have been registered in 2018 as compared to 634 last year.

The state ranks third in the country with about 12,250 road fatalities every year while Mumbai ranks 6th in the list with 51 ‘black spots’. Last year in 2017, Mumbai recorded 59 ‘black spots’. The number of black spots on the Mumbai-Pune expressway have reduced from 11 to 7.

This was discussed in State Road Safety Commission’s 7th meeting that was chaired by Transport Minister Diwakar Raote.

Meanwhile, Transport Secretary Ashish Singh said that because of the wrong classification of the roads, the number of black spots have increased.

One of the RTO officers said that the department has taken up several short and long measures to make the roads safer.
