Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab on Monday announced that the pending salaries to the employees of Maharashtra State Road Transport (MSRT) will be paid before Diwali.

Parab said that a month’s salary will be paid by Monday and the remaining dues for two months will be cleared before Diwali along with a bonus. This comes after two MSRT employees committed suicide over non-payment of dues.

The ST employees committed suicide within a span of 12 hours. In his suicide note, one of the workers blamed the Uddhav Thackeray government for non-payment of dues and reduction in salaries.

“ST workers need not be disheartened and should not take any extreme step. We have asked the banks for a loan for their salaries,” Parab said.

Earlier, the MSRTC board issued a statement regarding the non-payment of salaries for August and September. The state-run corporation sought ₹3,600 crores from the Maharastra government for paying salaries and other expenses.

Parab, who also serves as the chairperson of MSRTC, said that the losses of the corporation have gone up to ₹5,500 crores. MSRTC needs ₹292 crores per month for payment of salaries to its workers.

Funds have been sought from the government to pay remaining dues of the MSRTC employees and immediate efforts will be made to give advance to employees on the occasion of Diwali, the minister informed.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded Parab’s arrest while holding the Uddhav Thackeray government over the suicide of ST worker Manoj Chaudhary.
