A PIL has been filed by the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh in the Bombay High Court to proclaim journalists and other members of the media industry as frontline workers and permit them to use the local train services.

The group believes that whilst 12 states in India have declared journalists and media groups as essential workers, Maharashtra hasn’t done so. According to reports, the PIL highlighted that during the pandemic, collecting news and providing it to the people has become the need of the hour. It also stated that media plays a pivotal role in providing precise details about coronavirus related policies, vaccination and much more. In spite of representing before Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on May 21, a decision hasn’t been undertaken thus the group solicits the court’s mediation.

The PIL, state narratives, highlights that people in the said field hail from humble backgrounds thus, travelling by local trains is the most efficient mode of transportation for them in the city. At present, only those offering essential services can ply by the local trains.

On August 1 2021, Mumbai reported 331 cases with 10 covid-19 deaths. The total tests conducted stood at 32,894, whilst the recovery rate is 97%. On the other hand, Maharashtra reported 6,479 new cases and 157 deaths on the said date.
