On Monday, the stopped local service between Wadala and Mankhurd due to rains forced the passengers to turn towards the loss-making mono rail. Passengers travelling to Chembur, Wadala, Dadar, Lower Parel, Lalbaug, Mahalakshmi preferred Monorail. This led to a significant 30 percent increase in monorail ridership on Monday. 16,000 to 17,000 passengers travel on this monorail route every day, while on Monday, more than 21,000 passengers travelled on the monorail.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has constructed a 20 km long mono rail line between Chembur-Jacob Circle. However, this route has been running at a loss since it entered service. A lot of efforts are being made by MMRDA to increase the number of passengers on this route, to bring the route out of losses. But even after that, the number of passengers on the monorail route has not increased.
A few thousand passengers travel through this route every day. However, on Monday, it was noticed that there was an increase in the number of passengers on the Monorail route. Everyday, around 6000 passengers travel by monorail till 2 pm, however, on Monday, 10,000 passengers travelled till 2 pm.
Local service between Wadala – Mankhurd on Harbour route was suspended from Monday morning till afternoon due to heavy rain. Meanwhile, the local service was affected due to waterlogging on the railway line including Chunabhatti, Sion and other places. Since there was no local, passengers preferred Monorail to go to places like Chembur, Antop Hill, Lower Parel, Chinchpokli, Dadar, Naigaon, GTB Nagar etc. That is why the increase in the number of passengers was seen even after 2 pm, informed a senior official of MMRDA.
The total number of passengers of mono rail reached 18 thousand at 7 pm which was 10 thousand till 2 pm. During the day, 21 thousand passengers travelled on the monorail route. Overall, the daily ridership of the monorail has increased and this has also contributed greatly to the revenue of the MMRDA.
