The National Security Council and the State Government of Maharashtra recently asked the State Transport (ST) corporation to conduct a security operation at the department, and as per the directives, officials will be carrying out the same for a month, from 18th January to 17th February 2021.

ST is one of the most important modes of transport in the state, and over the last few months, it has been serving the people of Maharashtra amidst the lockdown. Furthermore, the department has been providing safe transportation services to around 65 lakh passengers every day.

Over the last 72 years, a sense of credibility about ST has been instilled in the minds of commuters through uninterrupted and secure service, and in order to strengthen this trust, a security campaign is conducted in the month of January-February every year at the corporation.

The campaign focuses on driver awareness, training, health check-ups, vehicle license checks, technical fitness, and other aspects of vehicles. At present, over 35,000 drivers are working with the ST in Maharashtra, and the department has organized training camps for the drivers from time to time to understand issues and various causes of the accident, which would eventually help the officials with solutions.

Apart from training the drivers regarding the importance of safe travel, officials also focus on awareness being provided at the depot level to strengthen their mental balance. As a result of all this, the number of ST accidents have been less than other passenger vehicles in the last few years.

Sharing the information, Shekhar Channe, Vice President and Managing Director, ST Corporation, has appealed to the department to provide accident-free service to the general public and care for ST drivers' safety. Besides this, the team has been asked to follow the four principles focused on the safety of passengers, observance of traffic rules, good physical health and mental health.

Since the state is under the coronavirus outbreak, the safety campaign will be implemented with the help of the government guidelines drafted for social distancing amidst the pandemic.
