To reduce the increased cost of fuel, to curb the increasing pollution, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC has decided to purchase electric buses. Accordingly, 150 buses will be purchased in the first phase. 75 buses will arrive by the end of March. 50 of these buses will run on the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
Electric charging facility will be provided on other routes including Mumbai-Pune highway. In the second phase, a target has been set to procure 5000 electric buses in the ST fleet by 2024. Therefore, in the near future, electric charging stations will be started on the highways where electric buses are running by the MSRTC administration.
By the end of March, these buses will be operated preferentially at places with electric charging stations. At present, there are electric charging stations for buses at Borivali, Thane, Swargate, Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, said an MSRTC officer.
