The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) will start applying a coat of anti-microbial chemicals across its fleet of 1,500 buses to curb the spread of bacterial infections among travellers. The coating on surfaces will consist of a chemical agent which stops the growth of microbes.

The MSRTC said that 1,500 buses across Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Ratnagiri will undergo the coating process.

Officials claim that this decision has been taken with the coronavirus in mind while it will also help maintain general hygiene inside the buses.

“Currently, the buses are being sanitised with disinfectants on a regular basis and it will continue even after the coating,” an MSRTC official said. The agency will decide on applying the chemical coating on more buses in the future depending on the results from the first phase.

A tender was published in May 2021 to choose the agency that will carry out the task of applying the anti-microbial coating within the buses.

It was then awarded to a Mumbai-based company. This company will be tasked with applying the coating on the buses at least twice per year.
