In a significant update on Mumbai's transportation system, the iconic non-air-conditioned (AC) double-decker buses by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport are scheduled to be permanently retired. They have been a familiar sight on the streets of city since 1937. The decision comes in adherence to the 15-year lifespan limitation imposed on these buses.

The retirement process will take place in a phased manner. Out of the 19 remaining double-decker buses in the city, nine will be taken out of service this month. This will be followed by the removal of seven more buses in August. The remaining two buses will be decommissioned in September and October. It will leave only one non-AC double-decker bus in the fleet until October.

The primary reason behind the retirement of these beloved buses is the safety concerns associated with their continued operation. It is worth noting that there are currently no plans to reintroduce non-AC double-decker buses into the system.

Efforts are being made to preserve the legacy of these iconic buses. The BEST officials are considering the possibility of keeping one of these buses in their museum.

The retirement of the non-AC double-decker buses will have an impact on certain routes. Commuters travelling on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT)-Churchgate and Santacruz East railway station routes will experience changes due to the absence of these buses. It remains to be seen how alternative arrangements will be made.

Over the years, the number of double-decker buses in the fleet has gradually decreased. Prior to the pandemic, the fleet boasted around 120 double-deckers, but this number has dwindled over time.

Finding suitable replacements for these iconic buses has proven to be a challenge for Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST). The organisation is currently operating 12 air-conditioned e-double-decker buses manufactured by Switch Mobility. However, there is a struggle to find sufficient AC double-decker electric buses to meet the demand. BEST has urgently requested that the manufacturer expedite the delivery of these much-needed vehicles.
