Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Will Create up to 90,000 Jobs Says NHSRCL

Though there have been oppositions to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has now said that this corridor will generate up to 90,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Elaborating on this, the NHSRCL said that it the ambitious bullet train project will require 51,000 technicians as well as skilled and unskilled labourers. 

NHSRCL spokesperson Sushma Gaur said - “NHSRCL is exploring the possibilities of providing training to unskilled labourers in various construction-related disciplines such as bar bending, tile and concrete laying, construction electrical works, plastering, among others, to improve their chances of employability and earnings.”

The NHSRCL has said that it has completed 64 per cent of the land acquisition required for the project, with the majority of the land reportedly located in Gujarat while the remaining on the Maharashtra side of the railway line.

In total, this bullet train project will have a 460 km viaduct, tunnels of up to 26 km in length, a 7 km underwater tunnel, and 27 steel bridges on its path. 

Though the project was expected to be completed by December 2023, officials currently remain pessimistic about meeting the deadline given the months lost due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

“Important construction-related tenders are expected to be opened and finalised in a few months. These tenders are for the design and construction of civil and building works involving viaducts, bridges, maintenance depots and station buildings,” an unnamed senior NHSRCL official was quoted as saying by HT.
