The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) has recently been relying on wet leasing of buses. Also the fleet of Best buses has also been reduced. It is clear that the demand of Mumbaikars for the best buses has not been affected by the continuous decrease in the number of buses.
Also, 280 mini buses have been stopped since last two weeks. Due to this, passengers are being inconvenienced. This is said to have affected BEST transport due to over-reliance on leasing.
The population of Mumbai is around 2 crores. Considering the number of passengers, 3,337 buses are required. However, the number of fleet acquired by BEST has decreased by 1,000. BEST relies heavily on wet leases, with 2,000 buses on the road, the Mirror reports.
Transport activists in Mumbai are protesting the privatisation of essential services. BEST has demanded that its own buses be procured to provide safe and reliable travel to the citizens.
